Harry Lauder's Walking Stick

After doing a quick search I found out that Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is a ornamental cultivar of Common Hazel. I wonder if they make edible nuts? :)

An ornamental is just what we want. Plus the trimmings! FUN for crafting and carving. (I know that is years away!)

After doing a quick search I found out that Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is a ornamental cultivar of Common Hazel. I wonder if they make edible nuts? :)
Mine never did. It did have some lovely catkins in the spring, but I never found a nut. And I did have a row of hazel nut trees planted near both waiting for their forever home. That and a witch hazel tree which is a wholly different animal.

Huh. If I had the room I'd be experimenting with crossing them with producing hazelnuts. They would make a great edible-ornamental if they did produce enough.

Hazel nut is great for healing dry or damaged skin, I use it on my acne. It would probably take a lot more than one tree to extract enough of the oils though.

I have found a total of two nuts in three years off one particular bush. It was on the ground beneath it though, so it's possible I found the same nut twice!

I got him one of each. They came looking very good. The reg. one is in the ground. The Red Dragon is potted up and waiting for a tree to come down to make room! Here it is beginning to leaf out.
