Harvested my corn

before the worms got them all. I checked it everyday and today I found worms on almost every ear! I think I spoke too soon about my garden not having a pest problem.
I picked 47 ears. I have no idea if that's a good amount for what I planted. I blanched and froze them. Oh, and they taste yummy!

I have some corn plants that might be 3" tall, but I'm inclined to exaggerate about sweet corn . Knee-high by the 4th of July is certainly the very best I can hope for in this cool year.

All my corn is likely to be bicolor. Usually, I have white and sometimes add a bicolor - of course, they are inclined to mix, a little. I wanted to have Bodacious again and I had some Sugar Buns yellow sweet corn seed that I bought several years ago. I was inspired here on TEG to use up old seed! So, now I've got a little of all 3 colors . . Oh well, it shouldn't matter.

OooOOOo, Yum! Really nice photo too.

We put a drop of mineral oil on each ear. That will usually smother any corn earworms before they have time to make any damage. Apply after tassles come out and pollination has occured.

Also planting early helps. That allows your plants to mature before corn earworm season starts.

I tried the oil on the tassles before and it didn't work.

Mine are a ways off still. But I had worm problems last year too. I was suggested to do the mineral oil (thanks Bee for the heads up) and I was also suggested to do the clothes pins? Might give the second one a try if I can find some at the $1 store!

Clothes pins? Won't that interfere with pollen transfer on the silk?

Corn earworms aren't usually a big problem here. They may not like something -- if it is the rocky soil, I can ship rocks to anyone who will pay the freight!

Pyrethrum/rotenone has worked, it seemed to me. It should also knock the aphids off.

vfem, I'm not sure about another harvest of corn. The weather is so hot already - upper 90's - and the humidity is unbearable!

Clothes pins? I haven't heard that one.

Put some corn on the grill last night - yummy!!!

Congratulations!!
I put in about 7 packages of sweet corn in patches throughout my "orchard". In a couple of places you see one corn plant here and there. But in two of the patches I'm growing little jungles of sweet corn. Mine is only about up to my knee, but I planted them in Mid-May. The field corn behind our house is easily chest level and the monsoon rains this week make it grow right in front of us.

Hope you freeze some to have in the middle of next winter, when you'll REALLY appreciate the taste.
