We bought a lot 10+ years ago. The soil was very poor. Mostly clay cap (Over old landfill site.) We are always adding manure, leaves, grass clippings, etc... Now we have some decent soil to plant in,

A ground cover for the winter can be tilled under in the spring. Another way to add organic matter to the soil as Carol said.
