Home made vermicomposters?

I've been doing some research, and it seems relatively simple. Don't want to shell out $100 for one of these things if I don't have to.

Has anyone made their own? Success stories?:tools

a friend of mine uses an old rubbermaid container with holes drilled in the bottom and sides with screening covering the bottom holes the only cost she had was the worms

And they did ok? You don't have to give the a place to crawl to (out of their.."poopy dirt"?). All of the stuff I've read says to have a screen on top so they crawl up to food once they have cosumed everything in one level...
