We're planning on building a poly tunnel for the garden so we can start a bit earlier with planting, etc. I'm looking for photos of homemade poly tunnels, I was considering making it like a gambrel roof or a triangle but I'd like to see what you guys have done first.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. But I wanted to bump this up.

Do you have any sample photos to explain more?

Something like this is fairly "rudimentary" and maybe a little too much that way for what you are thinking about:

Here is what it looks like from above after the warm weather has arrived, the plastic has come off and the vines start covering the one-half inch pvc pipe. (That's my little greenhouse [sunshed] beside it):

Are you looking for a hoop house big enough to stand in, or a tunnel that is just veg-sized?

This will need to be in a wind-protected location. It does not take too much wind to leave you waving bye-bye to plastic disappearing into distant trees. Barring an extremely sheltered location, you may have better luck lining up a buncha straw or mulch-hay bales on either side of the row of plants, and topping with frames with plastic stapled to them weighted down by cinderblocks at strategic locations. To vent, you can pull the frames to one side (along the row, so still supported by both sets of bales) to create vent openings here and there.

Good luck,

Pat

it's going to be the stand up inside type. it's beside our garage but no where is really wind proof at our place living on a hill LOL. i've got 6 mil poly and i can get thicker, this thing will be made to last at least one or two seasons and then replacing the poly after that with new poly.

We have built our greenhouse in that fashion. and we live on top of the highest hill in our county. Here are a few photos

DH made the frame and staked it to the ground and then bent the hoops and they are attached to the frame.

We then used weed blocking fabric inside and covered it with gravel. and used 4mil greenhouse plastic for the overall covering.

Then we found a material called vinyal pane that is as clear as glass flexable and 8 mil thick here DH is putting on the front of the greenhouse. We have plans to make framed panels of this and using it further up along the sides, for the next covering. As it is much more durable and translucent than the greenhouse plastic. Our structure is 38Lx20Wx12H so this maybe bigger than you want but I hope it gives you some ideas.

This is our tomato plants about 4 weeks ago.

I hope this helps
