How do I keep weeds out of asparagus?

I have a large bed of asparagus. How do I keep the weeds out. I have quack grass mostly. I use a thick layer of straw around the berries, but could the asparagus grow through the straw?

I use leaves for weed control in asparagus. Works good and helps the ground too.

I till the top inch or two in the fall and in the spring I put down a good layer of salt. I know that is old school but, it works!
