Been so long since I've been able to garden, can't remember; I've picked most of my purple hull peas with just a few blooms left. Can I expect another round or is this about it?

Sounds about right. Got some that I planted later, if they have time to bear. Guess several successive plantings next yr. would keep me in fresh peas for awhile.

I thought you could only grow peas in the early spring?? This is news to me...

Aren't they called "Southern Peas?" A Vigna so they are actually a bean, Lesa.

I have grown yard-long beans a couple of times but that must be something different.

Yeah, there's a can of black-eyed peas in the supermarket waiting for me most anytime ;).

Steve

Oh, but fresh ones or even frozen, are so superior to canned or dried. It's just the green, aka garden, aka English peas that only do well in early spring or fall. The purple hulls, cowpeas, crowders, blackeyes, (Southern variety) peas can take heat, but take a while to fill out. They don't need fertile soil and help fix nitrogen.
