How much food till you need to go to store

3 maybe 4 days for food, by 4th day would be eating things that have been in back of fridge and pantry forever. Wine at least 6 months. My excuse I am a single guy.

There is a movie out called blackout, the whole country losses eclectic. After a week food and gas run out. Everybody who has a food supply stored, how far would you go to protect it?

I like half gallon glass canning jars. They are good for storing rice, beans, pasta and dry goods. I have squirrel DNA.
I love those 1/2 gallon jars, too. I didn't know that they made them until last year. THE only problem I see with them is that the glass is the same thickness as 1/2 pint jars, so they could be more fragile. I used the ones I bought to store apple juice I made from cooking down apples, with some cinnamon.

About three years ago my wife and I started experimenting with canning meats, meat dishes, soups, and other things that we had not done in the past. Maybe we just didn't see a need to do it. But we are semi-preppers nowadays and we have much, much more "preserved" foods and supplies than ever before. We have a small chest type freezer but we do not rely on frozen foods in our emergency preparations.

Potato chips, potato chips, gotta have potato chips!!!
I better stop now. Some of you guys are going to start believing me. :idunno

Me too @Smiles Jr.
I'm currently making soups like crazy and freezing them in individual servings. As time permits - I plan to thaw and can. It's an extra step but I just haven't had time lately to run the pressure canner - 90mins/qt takes a LONG time from start to cooled.
I have started roasting and canning up the roosters that were processed this fall. In general, each one will yield 3qts of meat and 5 qts of broth. Each quart of broth, mixed with beans or veggies will yield an additional 3-4qts of soup. Feeding one bird for 6 months makes a LOT of food. :-)

My new root cellar/storage room/wine cellar has enough essentials down there to last easily 60 days and maybe much more if we had to shift into survival mode. But I LOVE POTATO CHIPS!!! Fresh potato chips!!! Lays potato chips!!! Chips, chips, gimme chips!!! Oh! Excuse me. I lost my mind for a minute.
Potato chips are so easy to make and we prefer them -- fresh, hot and salty -- to store bought. Also, other veggie chips are possible.

Need to share possibilities. Maybe a thread on that as others may add to it? Or here, I don't care but would like it easy to find.
