Hoodat hit it. If you put the pellet fertilizer further away from the roots, it has time to break down into the soil and the plant can get it, and take what it needs when it wants it. Too close to the root and it forces a high amount chemical too quick.
Diluted things like duck poo or compost tea have smaller amounts and act like slow release on the plants. More like 1-1-1 then 10-10-10 all at once!
I take 1 shovel full of my compost and put it in a 5 gallon bucket and then fill with water. I distribute that water to my plants after letting it sit 24 hours. They seems to do just right for them.
