According to the Garden Helper, although some varieties of passion flower are a roadside weed in the southeastern United States, its a prized garden vine in other parts of the country. Passion flower has large, unusual flowers that bloom in May and edible oval fruit that follow the flower. Hardy to zone 5, passion flower will grow in parts of Nebraska with a little winter care. Other parts of Nebraska are considered zone 4, and special precautions will need to be taken for this plant to thrive.
1.Passion Flower in the Garden
1.1 Select a location in your garden that receives full sun in the early spring after all danger of frost is passed and the soil has warmed. Although passion flower will grow in partial sun, it flowers better in full sun.
1.2 Choose a variety of passion flower vine that is acclimated to zone 5. Passiflora incarnate or the maypop passion flower is one suggestion.
1.3 Loosen the soil with a shovel to a depth of 18 inches. According to the Garden Helper, passion flower is adaptable to many well-drained soil conditions, but it will thrive in an organic rich soil. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the soil and mix well. This will improve drainage and help improve the nutrients in the soil.
1.4 Plant your passion flower at the same depth it was growing in its previous container. Water well to remove any air pockets and saturate the roots.
1.5 Spread a 2-inch layer of mulch around your plant to conserve water and regulate the soil temperature. The mulch will also reduce the growth of weeds.
1.6 Water your passion flower vine often, keeping the soil moist but not wet. According to Easy To Grow Bulbs, passion flower vines need up to 1 1/2 inches of water a week.
1.7 Provide a sturdy trellis on which the passion flower vine can grow.
1.8 Feed your passion flower with a 10-5-20 fertilizer after planting and every two weeks while the plant is blooming.
1.9 Spread a thick layer, at least 5 inches, of mulch over the area where your passion flower vine is growing before the first winter frost. This will help insulate the roots from the cold winter temperatures. The vine will die back as soon as it's touched by frost, but should return in May.
2. Passion Flowers in Containers
2.1 Select a large enough container for the expansive passion flower roots. A 10- to 20-gallon pot should be sufficient. Make sure the pot has good drainage. Fill the container with compost-enriched potting soil.
2.2 Plant the passion flower vine at the same depth it was growing in its previous container and water well to collapse any air pockets. Provide a sturdy trellis on which the plant's vine can grow.
2.3 Place your passion flower vine in a sunny location and keep the soil moist, but not wet, as the vine grows. Fertilize every two months while the vine is blooming.
2.4 Bring your passion flower vine indoors before the first expected frost.
2.5 Place your passion flower vine near a south-facing window where it will receive bright, indirect light. Return it to the garden after all danger of frost has passed.

Tips & Warnings
Do not fertilize your passion flower vine in the winter. This is a period of rest for your vine, even if the leaves remain green.
