A small container of commercial nectar came with the feeder and I used it after doing some research.

"The key point in deciding whether or not red dye is harmful to hummingbirds is simple. There is no conclusive research saying the dye is dangerous to the birds, but there is also no long-term research saying it is safe.May 4, 2018"

The controversy continues, however, they are such tiny creatures I decided to eliminate the nectar, make my own and use a large red mat to attract them to the feeder.

I have read that red and a couple other dyes can cause cancer and other issues in humans as well.

I add zero dye-too cheap-once they know where the feeder is, they visit hourly. Dive bomb me when I let it go empty.

In one of the photos of the doe I could tell that she was nursing. Today, she was standing by the side of the driveway with twins. Just what we need, more deer.
