This was my technically my first year starting plants from seed. I tried it a few years ago and was very unsuccessful. This year I invested in some cheap heat mats and a simple cheap grow light that I got off of amazon.com and had wonderous results! I ended up with 100 ready-to-plant tomatoes, and 180 ready-to-plant peppers. All the seeds I used were heirloom varieties. Clearly I don't need that many tomatoes and peppers so I decided I would sell them for $1.00 apiece. The garden centers here sell these plants anywhere from $1.80- $3.00 a plant. I sent out an email to a few family and friends and have recieved great results. I have sold about 35 tomato plants and 40 pepper plants so far. I ended up making money out of this whole ordeal! I covered the costs of seeds, heat mats, and my grow light. I never in a million years would have imagined this many people would want my plants. I haven't even sold them all yet, and the emails keep rolling in with people wanting more! I have made enough so far to cover the costs of my seeds for next year. Now hopefully I save enough plants for myself....:throw

That sounds great Hotpepperqueen, !! ;)
See it really does pay off later on by planning ahead. I'm thinking of doing the same with all the extra plants I started from seed. It sure is great to make some money from extra plants.

I'm selling my seedlings for the first time this year, too. I sold some already to family, and am going to sell (for the first time ever!) at a local farmer's market, starting this Saturday. It is pretty awesome how much money you can make off of a little investment in seeds & supplies.

No offense intended, but when I was in sales it was said, "Once you have sold to all of your family and friends than you will find out if you're really cut out to be a salesman."

Best of luck.

Don't pay any attention to that OG!

Just wink at those customers ;) and imply the technology and knowledge base is waaaay beyond their meager capability for growing plants.

Why, it has taken yeeaars of preparation to get to this stage of making your offerings available for sale . . . at a remarkably good price, I should add.

Steve :)

Did somebody say money? I want money!? Money? Wait - what is this thread about, other than Money? I like money. Precious.

Money?

That's awesome. I am impressed! I can't sell anything! I give away fresh Jersey milk and cream and eggs to everyone on the ranch...they expect me to grow the veggies for them LOL

That is great!! I think I have you beat though...I honest to God, sold 2 five gallon buckets of chicken poop for 10.00!! I get a smile on my face every time I think of it! Happy Gardening!

I did that one year. Then expanded the next... this year I only grew for myself since after I accounted for electricity and driving to pick up spots (live in an apartment), my time was beginning to be free... and as a working student, it became overwhelming. I ran my lighting on 16 hour day light cycles and it bumped electricity 20-40 a month...

Glad it is working for you!

Lesa, that is hilarious!

Want to be a sales rep in my Ice store franchise in Point Barrow Alaska? We'll be needing a door to door rep up there from November to March.
