Sunday my DH and I went for a drive on some country roads around here. I drove so he could gawk around and not run off the road. Driving on a narrow black-top, a pickup with a dog in the back pulled out in front of me, and never got up to speed. So I was just trying to maintain good distance, knowing there was no place to pass, when off to my left this beagle came dashing out onto the road, chasing the truck and canine passenger. Now, at various times, I have experienced dogs chasing my car, chasing the tires, and it scares me but they always know not to get too close. This dang dog ran right into my car! I felt a couple of thumps, and then saw the dog run off into a field, and he kept on going, up through the brush and out of sight. He was running on all four legs, but his tail was tucked down, and he wasn't running real smooth. I'm pretty sure the tires didn't run over him, as the thumps were not that type of feeling. Still......
I turned around and we looked for him, and stopped at a couple houses in that area, but no one claimed him or knew who he belonged to. One lady said a stray beagle has been getting in her trash and being a general nuisance, so that may have been him.
I felt so bad about it, but couldn't think of anything else to do.
Nothing you can do either; I just had to confess.

Aww, there was nothing you could have done. :hugs Beagles can go pretty far when they're lost because they start trailing something and just go. Could be even a couple of counties over, or someone went hunting and he was separated from the pack. That happens a lot around here. I've had stray beagles pass through my yard (and try to eat my chickens) on several occasions. So much for a relaxing Sunday drive though, huh? Sorry it was ruined for you.

Sorry this happened to you so Lucky, the same thing happened to me about 10 yrs ago. an Aussi ran out in front of me and went right under the pickup before I could respond. We were just on the outskirts of a small town we were passing through, the dog jumped up and ran to the house whos yard it came from and laid down on the porch. I turned around and went back to the house where the owners were already attending to the dog. the dog ended up just getting banged up from rolling under the truck and made a full recovery. Luckily the dog did not get run over by a tire or he would have not made it. My guess is if you did not feel a tire go over the dog that he just got banged up from the under carriage hitting him. It is An aweful feeling though whenever things like this happen, I am sure he ran staight home to his owner after that!

Ack thats such a freaky feeling! Perhaps you can hope that he learned his lesson about cars and will now stay far away!

Some dogs never learn. I worked at a place that had a rottweiler that actually tried to bite tires. One day he succeeded in getting his teeth into one. It flipped him and broke his neck. Not fatally, he made a full recovery, and picked up where he left off trying to bite tires...
Sorry your relaxing Sunday drive didn't end up so relaxing So Lucky.

I wonder if he was chasing the truck that pulled out in front of you?? Would be a shame if the person in the truck left the beagle there. That's how I got my 'middle dog'. :-(

Around these country roads it is mostly red squirrels (the greys are much smarter -- or faster), and rabbits, with the occasional raccoon, opossum, skunk or wood chuck at night. So far so good for avoiding deer. Still it is sad when it happens. I fully agree with live and let live until they threaten me or mine.

I have had it happen with cats chasing cats.

Lean forward and think, "well, that cat sure was cutting it close! Then, see the cat that was chasing it just out of the corner of my eye . . !"

Fully focused -- Garbanzo feels she needs to threaten the 2 big male dogs on the other side of the east fence. She is snarling and running back and forth . . . each must outweigh her by a power of 10! Good thing the neighbor's fence is strong. One of those neutered males likes to tear thing up when he is excited. Better be just one of his toys or the yard ornaments or the neighbor's flower bed fencing or plants ripped out of the ground. If Garbanzo gets them upset enuf, maybe they'd tear each other up!

Don't worry about it, So Lucky. They are just running on instinct and that's pretty much 24/7.

I was going to help a friend by taking a road trip with his truck and trailer and pick up a load of tubing.
His dog had the habit of chasing vehicles and went after the trailer, he bit into the sidewall of a tire and slowed the trip down be a couple hours, he took out a fairly new tire!!!
