When I got rid of my chickens, I started putting only kitchen scraps in my compost pile. After a while, I noticed the pile was filled with red wigglers.

When we moved a couple of years ago, I filled up some of the zillion planting pots we had and moved the compost pile with me. (At one point my husband did ask why he was loading pots of dirt onto the moving truck. :p )

Even with fairly cold winters, my worms have survived outside. I put a plastic tarp on in the winter to keep most of the rain out, and cover it with a light colored sheet in the summer to reflect the sun and keep the birds from having a feast. When I need to water it in the summer, I can just turn the hose on and water right through the sheet.

I think part of the success with having the pile outside is to have a big enough pile. The worms do seem to retreat toward the center during very hot or very cold spells.
