I find myself getting the bug to grow things now that the outside world is lifeless, cold, and snow-covered. The Christmas tree has been filling my need for living plant-life with its delightful smell, but today's project is to undecorate it and fling it over the porch railings, to be hauled up into the woods. It started losing needles in earnest a few days ago. It had a good run though; I bought it early last month.

It was definitely time to fire up my little grow kit. This is from last winter, but my little pea shoots should be sticking their heads up soon like these. The LED lights make this spare room more cheerful and dispel the darkness of short and cloudy winter days. They light up this whole big room.

I have a new appreciation for my winter house plants too. Geraniums grown from slips, and coleus grown from seed, make the house feel more alive.

Anyone else battling the winter blues by growing things? I envy those of you with greenhouses.

i used to have three eight foot shelves with lights on them from above, plus the floor in front of the bottom shelf all full of house plants and a few terrariums, but this was many years ago before i went off to college. i took a few plants with me and kept hauling them around from place to place as i had to move often (sometimes twice a year or more) until they finally died off. i was very surprised by how long the miniature orange tree lived even as a very small plant it would keep trying every year, but at last life in a very dark and cold attic was too much for it.

now i keep a few amaryllis plants and they go dormant for the winter so i am actually glad for that as i'm so tired of caretaking/gardening in the warmer season that when winter comes around i'm happy to have a break.

this winter i'm possibly going to get the heat mat out and try to start some peppers for the first time in a long time but i'm not sure where or how i can set that up and get them enough light and also enough warmth (this room can get rather cold in Jan/Feb). it's just not easy living in a small house and not having extra room.

ooh! i do have a light i can use! :) and even a spot i can do this, but the problem would be that i'd need to get my pictures taken sooner than i'm currently thinking so... eek! :) we'll see how it goes...

I tried micro dwarf tomatoes one year. I found myself without my grow lights, so I tried just in a window area. It was not enough. I may try again soon now that I have grow lights again. Maybe also get a head start on some herbs.
Good to know. That means I'm going to win! I bought a grow light and just planted four tomatoes to grow solely indoors. We can grow anything out here, just not tomatoes as the blight is horrendous. So this year, I'm going to try this. Hubby thinks he'll beat me and is trying some in the window. Sounds like I'll win!

This is three Rutgers and a Tiny Tim. (The trays on the back wall are for growing hard red winter wheat for the chickens.)
