Your plants look GREAT! This is from growing in a south window? I think I am doing everything wrong. My plants are not getting enough light in that greenhouse in the kitchen, maybe? I have south windows, but they are high up and my desk is in front of one and my DD has her desk in front of another, but maybe I should be looking into this south window thing. This picture is when we bought the house before we put furniture in. That is south and to the left is another part of the window like the one next to it. The one on the right looking out to see the white fence is west. The south ones are above waist, almost chest high.

Wow Steve, glad they are doing so well for you.

I just checked on mine, a few of the lettuces, broccoli, and peas are just coming up. The tomatoes still haven't done anything yet.

No lettuce planted yet. Maybe some transplants could go under plastic but I don't usually do that. Lettuce transplants are handy, tho', right thru the growing season.

GWR, it looks like the roof may overhang your windows. My South Window is in a gable wall so the overhang is way above it.

I can put 4 boxes on the window sill and 4 on the table. Those will get a long period of sunshine. The next row will get quite a lot less sun. The seedlings just starting out can stay there a couple of days. Then, they had better move forward into better light.

The weather service has just changed our forecast. Only 2 more days of sunshine. Shoot.

Having been in the greenhouse for about 8 weeks, here are the Walla Walla Sweets in the mid-day sun:

These are the peppers after a night to catch their breath from moving up into the 4-packs. There were 2 ½ flats, about 120 in all:


The statice has just shown up in the South Window. Today's warm sun should encourage the little sprouts! They arrive with the message that "history is a guide, not a destination!"

I'm having weird issues with my starts this year. Bad germination on about 1/2 of my varieties, plants just fizzling out, and plants unable to shed their seed coat. I know I'm not under or over watering. I made my own seed starting mix this year which is equal parts perlite, vermiculite, and spaghnum peat moss. That's the only thing I can think of that would be the issue? I did have one flat almost get fried to a crisp because of the heat mat but the flats on the other mats are doing the same thing. I'm getting kind of frustrated!

A friend asked about using insulation grade perlite the other day.

I couldn't tell her anything. What else could be in it?

But then, what else could be in any of it? I don't think there is much regulation on those things. Not beyond what Peter Grace did by allowing asbestos to go out in his vermiculite for decades. You know, before he got that job telling us how the government could be run like a business.

That only marginally has anything to do with your concerns, HPQ. It reflects on my anger and exposure.

Your peppers sure look good. I just planted more today. There is an overhang. For part of the day it does shine on the desks in here. I could bring a few things in and sit in the sun for awhile.

Could you now use a different mix, and start a few more of your varieties of seeds? If it is the seed starting mix, a fresh planting may thrive and overtake the ones that are stunted. My germination has been really good, but the plants don't seem to be growing very fast. Right now I am blaming it on having left the lights on 24/7.
