I know these are purple Irises...but why did it do this!???

I have never seen them do this before, after blooming. Is this some sort of seed pod??

It's the seed pod. Save them and plant them to see what you get. Do you lots of different colored ones or all the same?

My Father gave me several bags of iris roots, before he moved to Florida. He said there were several varieties in the bags...so far, only the deep purple have bloomed. I have them spread out all over the farm...so maybe next year, we will get different colors.
Seed pods hu?? I never knew they had seed pods!

I always cut mine off, like tulips, etc. I think the plant puts too much energy into the seed and not enough back into the rhizome...It is my understanding that you cannot grow iris from seed- might be worth an experiment though....

Thanks Ridgrunner....once they dry out, I will pluck them off...and save them untill October, then plant them, and see what happens. Interesting...Hmmmm.

Seed pods haven't hampered the vigor of my Irises, lol!
I'm drying them for winter crafts.

I always save the seed pods.
1. for the seeds , to see what new color i will get .
2.I use the dried pods on wreaths and flower arragments.
