June Bug invasion!

Journey if I was you Id skip the evening meal to your hens, then go out before the sun comes up and gather up all those starving hens. Then quietly sneak up to the front yard as the sun comes up, warms the ground and the June Bugs start getting active. Whisper quietly to the flock boss and to quote General Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) from Gladiator...."On my command, unleash Hell" and toss that big girl right into the fray of June bugs to lead the charge of hungry hens making short work of that invading army of June bugs.

Just picture this

as your hens sweep across the front yard as an unstoppable force.

That's right when they are huddled up in the coop in the middle of January looking out at the snow they'll start talking "remember that day we got all those June bugs that one morning?.....I've never had so much fun chasing them, let alone been so FULL. Notice how I never missed one either"

The younger birds will just roll their eyes as the old birds recall the good ole days of chasing June bugs. Of course by that time they'll be talking about how they got a million June bugs that morning, and how they had to walk to the coop up hill both ways, 10 feet of snow, back when an egg laid really meant something not like the pullets these days that just lay all willy nilly wherever they please.

Oh, I can see it! It would be a june bug apocolypse! I love to watch the chickens chase bugs, but with this many they wouldn't know where to start! I can just imagine them bonking into each other going for the same bug.

Curly-Kate, we have the little green beetles too, much the same coloring. I thought those were the japanese beetles. These guys are huge!
(Hoodat, I bet that would hurt!)

We've got the little brown ones too, about the same size as the japanese beetles, but plain brown. There's a lot of them too and they creep me out just about as much.

These guys are flying around in my garden. I'd rather they get the peaches (which are sad-looking this year anyway) than get my much anticipated tomatoes. :/

I set out the baby pool with a few drops of dish soap in it. I'm thinking about cutting up some old fruit and tossing it in there--perhaps it would work to lure them in!

I wonder if some of the peaches in the pool might lure them there. Few sacrifice a few for the greater good.

I still like the chicken idea but then I'm partial to that kind of chaos. It would be an instant youtube sensation.

We used to get those in the horse corrals, and they would lay there all still and dead looking until you bent to pick them up (they are an irresistible iridescent green,"ooo pretty!") then they would fly up in your face or buzz into your blouse ... really scream worthy!
I can't imagine an invasion of them! Creepy!

I always called those Japanese beetles. They are all over our grapevines, and some of my flowers. I hung up some of those bug bags yesterday, and then took a tip from someone here or on SS where they suggested feeding them to the chickens. Just drop them in a pail of water so they can't fly away, and then put the pail in with the chickens. It was bobbing for beetles in the run for a bit yesterday.

Yep, and screamin' don't help either! I know I must keep my neighbors pretty amused, dodging wasps and jumping over beetles.

It's been that way here too! Isn't it just insane how many they are... flying around all crazy, crashing into the house. I have to say I've been super entertained watching the ducks chase them and catch them right out of the air. So awesome!!!
