People who haven't had the privelege of being around real chickens also don't realize how much grass and weeds a chicken eats, given the chance. They gobble as much grass as a cow when you figure their size. That's what makes those dark orange tasty yolks.

Saturday and yesterday (Tue) we sold out of eggs more quickly than usual at the farmers markets we attend. We're in NC, far enough away from the current recall area. However, it was enough to make many people think about the possibility of the same thing occuring in this region.

Did you see the YouTube view linked in that article by Kirby in the OP? Not bad, 3 minutes, short and to the point.

The pictures of those battery hens, were enough to make you sick on the news... How can anyone look at those conditions and imagine that any kind of healthy food is produced?? The "farmers" have literally turned those hens into machines. Very sad indeed. There is no reason we shouldn't all have a few hens in the backyard.

Raising a cat or dog like that would get you arrested. Why is it legal to do it to a chicken?

That has been my very argument as of late. They have laws here now that you can NOT chain a dog up outside. It must have a fence, with fresh water and enough run space for its size to be legal. In some counties you have to have a permit even!

Yet, we have wild dogs attacking my chickens, and ferral cats everywhere!?

Our food will NEVER be safe enough for EVERYONE... With food, the MORE we make, the less healthy each technologically advanced meal becomes.
