My dog is a gentle beauty and loves my grandsons and actually all people in general. I kept a gate between her and the boys when they were quite little where they could still pet her with some protection between them. At 8 she is a quite lovely girl, but I am still cautious especially with kids. You never know what will trigger a bite. I would never keep a dog with a history of biting. At least kennel it with guests around.

There are so many dogs with great temperaments sitting in shelters needing homes, I have no tolerance for a dog that bites. Luckys penny is a good example.

We have never been dog owners so John is not familiar with breeds. He described it as being very active and small, but not tiny, of mixed breeding.

My 2 " number one helpers ' " ( 2 neighbor boys ) parents have now " adopted " 3 different dogs from the " rescue " shelter at $ 150 each over the last year and returned all of them for snapping and or threatening / snarling bad behavior to their 2 boys and one daughter ( now age 1 1/2 ) . The last one also had skin cancer that I immediately saw the day after they adoted it and pointed it out to them. They called the " rescue" and they said that they would not take it back for an exchange. No refund or credit .... so out $ 450 and nothing to show for it. The " rescue " put them out again for " adoption " to other unsuspecting suckers. Our new next door neighbors ( 2 guys ) on the other side of us have " adopted" a Lab x , and another 20+ lb mongrel that are as useless as anything that I have ever seen , but they sure are cute ( ugly and unruly ) to them ... No obediense, NO manners, are not leach trained, urinate on their carpets daily, jump on their table or counter to eat any food that may be there, bark all day when they are not home, when I go outside when they are in their back yard, these dogs rush the fence and bark and snarl at me non stop since last spring. The owners are insane or what for putting up with this type of behavior ??? As for the irrisponsible "rescue groups "

Thats why you have to do like lucky did. visit often and spend time with the dog. Some of the best dogs I board are from shelters. Here if you don't own a house your out of luck. It is almost impossible to find a rental that allows dogs. many great family dogs end up homeless because family had to move.

That's basically what I was going to say, it's a buyer beware situation.
It pays to do your due diligence in not only checking out the dog thoroughly, but also getting some reviews of the rescue group.

With all the good dogs available I wonder why people waste so much time and energy on off kilter dogs. On the other hand there are a lot of nimrods out there that have animals and are completely clueless.

@jackb I hope Ava gets some "good dog" counseling so she doesn't go through life being scared of dogs. In her situation, her fears are well grounded, but not all dogs are bad and it would be a shame for her to be frightened the rest of her life.

That said, were it my dog, it would not have a "history" of biting--it would be dead. I would shoot it myself for attacking a child.

I agree, I would never keep a dog that bites. Mine don't/didn't even growl at the grands no matter what the babies did. Getting up and moving away is the most mine have ever done.

When I first started in dogs I was young and foolish. looks where the most important thing to my breeding program, dogs that would win in the ring, temperament meant nothing to me. I had to learn the hard way, many of my early dogs where put to sleep.Years later it is now the first thing I breed for, looks means little to me now. Years have taught me temperament is everything! Most of the dogs I breed now willn' t even get their championship, never mind going best in show, I prefer that way.

I can't imagine anyone paying the prices these shelters charge for mongrel dogs. I've had shelter dogs too and they were the best dogs ever, but I got them for free~basically~ from those who got them from the pound and no longer wanted them...both of these individuals~vetted to be acceptable by the animal shelter as "good pet owners"~were neglectful owners, one even moved away from the home and left the dog tied up to a dog house on a 5 ft chain~where she had lived for a full year~ and the neighbors took pity and was bringing her food and water each day. The other got tired of watering the dog and gave him to me for the price of a carton of cigs.

Lots and lots of free dogs out there in the local ads that will just wind up in the pound if someone doesn't take them, so can't imagine why anyone goes to a shelter or pound to "buy" one.
