Okay here is my problem, I have a new unexpected fence I put up to protect my chickens from my little dog. I had not known I was going to put this fence in so I had not planned on what to plant along it. I had some adzuki beans, when I researched it online they were said to be warm weather lovers, but the problem is they came up looking like peas, growing like peas, blossoms like peas, and now pods like peas, so my thinking is if it quacks it is a duck. So I am fully expecting these new little plants to crash a burn in our VERY HOT okie summer (which is starting early) So I need to replant this row, late in the season (now and next couple of weeks at the latest.) I want something that will laugh at the Okie hot dry summer and either the chickens will eat or us.

I have never grown okra, won't eat it any way it can be prepared (have tried them all hate them all) but I could grow it for the chickens.

Would it be to late for okra, any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I'd just like to say, Kassaundra, I think you were on the right track initially. I don't suppose that you can get some actual adzuki beans soon enuf tho'.

I grew adzuki a couple of years ago. No, I don't remember the plants looking like peas.

Unfortunately, they didn't quite mature here before the growing season ran out. I had good plans for them: 1st off, I like that sweet bean filling in Chinese/Vietnamese pastries. 2nd, I figured that they were just the right size for the chickens to enjoy. One way or another, I thought I could make use of them.

I've never grown okra. It isn't a vining plant, right? I will plant a little foxtail millet soon. Foxtail is the spray millet you can buy for caged birds. It grows quickly for a grain crop and likes about the same conditions as corn.

. . . then there's corn ;).

I've never grown okra either, but seen it plenty of times, it is a state dish down here everyone eats it!!!! It is not a vine it is more like a pepper plant in structure, upright center stem, and it does very well in hot dry summers, just not sure if it is to late to start right now. Corn won't do well b/c it is a single long row along the fence.

Millet or even bird seed might work well that has millet, sunflower and whatever else is in it.

I had considered amaranth, but believe I am to late (and don't have easy quick access to seed right now)

I am going to do the adzukis again, but at a cool (pea like) time.

Okra is pretty too, has a hibiscus-like bloom. I think you have time for it, and it will love the heat.

I have a confession to make (they need a red faced smiley) Those adzukies that looked just like pea plants, well there is a reason for that, they WERE pea plants!!!!!!!!!! I forgot I had planted a few the first few feet on each side of the gate before I had decided it was just wasting seed b/c it really was to late and to early for fall planted peas. It was almost dark when I made this realization, so I am going to double check the real adzuki plants in the morning to see how they are doing.

I just planted okra last Weds and I'm in E Central Mo. This is the second time I've planted it this year, I think the first rows drowned!!!

I had the same problem last year and replanted about the 1st of June and got way more than I could ever eat!!!

I am going to plant okra today, I know it loves heat, so am sure it will be fine now. Love to make pickled okra.
