This happened last year, too. The yellow squash will *not* stay in their assigned places. Here is this year's edition about to escape its bed and go running off across the garden:

Is there some way to make these behave? The vines (if it is a vine?) are not like cantaloupe or cucumber that you can pick up and move. Once it's headed somewhere, how do you get it to turn?

Or... how do you grow yours?

Thanks!

They do tend to sprawl out of bounds. If space is limited, look for the "bush" type summer squash there's many varieties available now. They behave better and take up less space. Sometimes it's hard to find the seeds for the bush type, but their out there.

we grew pumpkins last year, and it was certainly more of a 'ARGH!!! Get out of the way!!!" thing than a "Hey, let's move this vine that is now trying to eat the lawnmower'... so I'm just going to wish you good luck with your squash!

I usually stick mine on the perimeters of the garden for that same reason. Then I spend the rest of the summer following them around, tucking mulch beneath. :P
