OK, did Thanksgiving and I forgot to buy an out of the bird stuffing mix for DD. So...I found a pound of sausage, added other ingredients and used the 4 stale croissants and made it up. NOW, I've been ordered to make this every year from now ON! So...I thought I'd share it:
2016 TURKEY Bread Stuffing
Ingredients:
1 one pound package of sausage (regular)
1 large onion
1 1/2 stalks celery
2 large fresh sage leaves
4 stale croissants
1 cup turkey drippings/juice (you can add while the turkey is baking)
NO SALT
1 teaspoon celery seed
fresh ground black pepper
2 tablespoons UNsalted butter (2 pats/measures)
cooking spray
Directions:
Use a deep saucepan, like for a roast
1) mince onion
2) cut stems off of sage leaves, mince sage leaves
3) add butter and saute onions and sage leaves on medium heat until carmelized
4) add sausage and mix until sausage is broken up and fully cooked, add pepper and cook for 5 for minutes
5) add turkey drippings, reduce slightly
6) turn off burner, cut up croissants and mix
7) spray glass rectangular (approx. 9 x 13") baking dish
8) add stuffing, cover with aluminum foil and cook on top of the turkey baking pan (or rack immediately above if it doesn't have a flat top, like mine does)
9) bake one hour at 250 degrees and remove and EAT!!
