My Soil Temperature >.<

None of my beds are raised. However, I did grab the sensor/probe out of the coop and set it at 3 different depths of my veggie garden.

2 inches 51.6 f
6 inches 50.2 f
12 inches 49.8 f

I think I am going to plant more peas today and if I get the soil dug up and smoothed out enough, I may throw in some lettuce. :th

My local extension made a distinction between English Peas and Southern Peas. I didn't know there were Southern varieties.... black eyed don't count, do they? :)
Southern peas ARE black eyed peas, they're also known as field peas here in the south. They are totally different than regular peas, they should be planted much later and actually require heat to produce well. I've never grown them, but my grandpa (originally from Alabama) loves them and still grows them every year.
See, now, I figured Black Eyed Peas and Field Peas were in a "bean" category, despite their names. Silly me. :)

So all my green English peas will have to wait 'til fall. Sigh.

There's a local food/farm/coop thing near me called Hollygrove Market and Farm, and they sell boxes of assorted veg from local-ish farms. Near the parking area, there's a fence that someone planted with peas sometime in the fall, and they've been going all winter long. I was hungry once when I went and snagged a couple pea pods off the fence, and ate those peas raw. SO TASTY. Craving them in my own garden now. ;)

I don't know that they are actually related to regular english peas, I think it's just their common name. I am also going to have to wait until fall for green peas, my early crop got murdered by aphids. Luckily, he snow peas that my kids put in their small garden beds went unnoticed by the critters so we should get a few handfuls of those before it gets too hot. I hope, anyway. :fl

Crazy couple of Springs here, last year it was record rainfall and damaging wind, this year it's record high temperatures... 85F air temp today, 2-3 months ahead of schedule.

We had snowy rain this morning in northern california. Soil feels to cold on my hands to plant peas or Lettuce or chard or beets yet. Golden Sweet Peas don'ty seem to mind summer heat if planted may 11th anyway, but i sure want to shoot for earlier this year!
