I found some old railroad ties in the cull section of home depot, and fashioned a planter out of them with rebar. I would like to make it a flower bed, maybe trying something new. Any suggestions? Specs-am sun, shade in the afternoon, and must be able to withstand NM heat this summer. I would love hardy, colorful, and aromatic flowers. Suggestions?

Hi Desertgirl:) I suggest checking out BotanicalInterests.com and checking out the Botanic Garden Series. It's a collection of seeds that are native to North America. Most are xeric and attract humming birds and butterflys.

Hope this helps. :)

There are some fragrant daylillies if you're interested in perennials. They grow wonderfully in any soil and in any if they can withstand arizona, NM will be like heaven.
