New babies

Speaking of babies, my sole chick from last year -- a November pullet -- has morphed over the winter to become a cocky young rooster. I remember wishing I'd had a rooster, but this little chick didn't seem to fit the bill. Suddenly he bloomed!

From his small size -- compared to Daddy and Grandpa, both Brahma/Australorp crosses of some sort -- I'm guessing his mother was my Easter Egger. She's the smallest hen of all my birds. I'll have to watch his 'performance' so if I do decide to eat the two older roos he is well behaved and I know he can hold his own among the bigger girls.

I hatched some chicks last weekend but had a pretty bad hatch. This is the first time I've ever known which hen laid which egg. I had seven from one pullet and none developed, were not fertile. I had six from another pullet and five of them hatched. I got three out of another hen's eggs. Since I wanted more I went to Orscheln's (a regional farm store) and got the last seven "panfry specials" they had left. Panfry are male full-sized chick from Cackle. I'm raising them purely for meat. So I have eight of mine and seven of theirs.

I put them in my brooder in the coop. It's been below freezing a few mornings but they are all doing fine. I heat one end and let the other cool off as it will. They are really good at self-regulating their temperature if they have a choice.

Here is a poor shot of the ones I hatched.

By color that is not a Salmon Favorelle. Some feather footed breeds I can think of off the top of my head are Cochin, Brahmas, and some Marans. I'm sure there are others.

i think blue Cochin. does it appear to have a single comb? what color are the feet? definitely not Faverolles since it has no sign of a beard & i don't see a 5th toe.
