Today I sat down with a couple of my star performers to discuss our production strategy going forward.
The overwhelming response was; We’d like a little more Sun! I assured them “it’s on the way”. They were looking kind of skeptical so we adjourned for the day and I delivered the Whiney ones to their new home; in the freezer life is hard- - even for a bean.

This afternoon this 2nd batch (for this season) of Compost tea will be ripe and ready to apply. I’ve gone over this at length previously and wont bore you with every jot and tittle; but this come’s as close to a “golden bullet” as your likely to get from a gardening standpoint. Done properly it yields remarkable results.

These tomato plants will attest to this.

This last picture shows the tea fully foamed; a sure sign “the microbes we’re breeding”. At this point it had a sweet smell and was applied to a number of things.
In another month everything in the outside beds will be up enough and i’ll fire up the “big bopper”, my 55gal brewer and make a batch for the whole garden/greenhouse.

The last couple days were “mostly sunny” giving us a Thank you Lord gathering this morning! Our season’s/weather are so ‘all over the place’; making nothing really predictable but when we do get a run of favorable weather great things happen - quickly!
Right now I’m keeping 6 families in Cucumbers each getting 1-2 a week. This will probably slow down in another month, when the production levels off at 4-6 a week from these vines.

Later this week we’ll eat our first maters!

Before it started raining today; i “hilled” the potatoes that were up. I go at this a little differently. First of all, i plant the seed 6-7 inches deep then on emergence my hilling is just the addition of my Compost. This might happen twice then i just leave them till fall. Never a shortage of potatoes from my 3x12 ft. Beds.

Those are gorgeous. I love my taters. I don't know how much I planted this year but I am having an issue with feral cats and my neighbors chickens. I am so on the verge of just learning how to shoot the 9mm my husband has to take them out. My husband is protesting the chickens because I told him that they would be in the stew pot and I will make some homemade egg noodles. He thinks I'm vicious but you gotta protect what's yours regardless

my hilling is just the addition of my Compost.

That has been my technique, as well. Flowering – – mound up with compost.

As tubers form, it is time for the 2nd fertilizing and compost serves 2 purposes. Tubers need protection from sunlight. Simply leaving compost on the soil surface bothers me somewhat but it  fits in okay with my technique of growing early varieties and following potato harvest with Asian greens for a late harvest. A flower showing up is my timing cue.

"Never a shortage of potatoes ..."? I fail in that regard. My basement storage room isn't the best for potatoes regardless of early or late varieties. Early harvest has set me off in some crazy directions trying to find cool conditions – ain't possible. We have a fridge in the carport but "normal" refrigerator temperature is supposed to NOT be proper for spuds. Early or late varieties, they hesitate before sprouting but that storage room is not proper for keeping either beyond early February.

On the longest day of the year; i picked the longest Cucumber i’ve ever grown. This was actually an accident as i don't like leaving them this long, making the plant put in the effort.
I gave it to our Daughter, telling her “it might be edible”? She also got a more realistic one.

Last year i planted 4 clumps of Self Heal in this bed. When it matured i clear cut and dried it. (We really like the tea)
After the cutting i just ignored it because i had all i wanted for the year. Well, apparently every seed that came from the second flowers was fertile as i now have what looks like 10,000 plants! I’ll have to root thru it and get rid of most of it as i don’t want it taking over the bed. The original 4 clumps did not return but im content in knowing it’s gonna be around for a while!

Here we are 5 weeks into the outside stuff. Looking forward, Beets and Chard - Potato - Broccoli / Kale.
Looking back on Broc and Kale and one of the heads. There’s 30 plants in this little footprint!
Looking the other way is Carrots, more Beets and Parsnips then Onions in the covered bed and Peas along the back fence.

Oh yea; Then a tray with the first picking from two Tomato plants!
