Hi guys,
I think 12" is fine for most things. Don't buy 12" lumber (IMO, some may disagree) -- buy 6" and stack it. I have done with same process. If you have any type of confusion then I would suggest for Garden Planter, which can help you to solve your problem.

I have 6" raised beds, 12" raised beds, 24" beds and anything in between. One I used full logs from the neighbor's old tree that had to be removed. Some are paver bricks I got dirt cheap. Some are timber. All are doing better than the places where I just have beds on flat ground.

I think I only purchased 1 railroad timber. All the rest was from garage sales, scrounged from neighbors junk piles or purchased off craigslist.
