Putting up a fence -- just a fence -- in the city requires a set back and the better side must face the neighbors. In the country, line fences are a different animal entirely. A line fence, by definition, is on the property line. They are usually just t-posts and wire -- nothing fancy.

I'm not sure that a fancy fence wouldn't need a set back even out here in the country.

My backyard at White Plains house is tiny, I put up a 6 foot wooden fence to keep my dogs safe. You would not believe the paperwork I needed. At country house I just put up same type of fence, no paper work needed.

Lucky for us, we had our fence up before they put the rule into effect. (And where allowed to keep it.) We put it ON the property line, and as good neighbors the nicer side faces the public. Then in all their wisdom, they allowed the Tavern next door to tie their new fence into ours. Grrrrr.
