No Mary, dairy are more loose...... Think about it, they are either pregnant or thinking about being pregnant.....& with almost any bull!
How loose the fertilizer is depends on the type of feed, amount of grain in the ration, and how green the grass in the spring is. Now think about it regarding the pregnancy ... since bovine cows can have ONE calf a year and the cow has to have a calf in order to produce milk, she has to be pregnant almost year round. Dairy cows are milked for 305 days per year, then dried off for the end of pregnancy and preparation for delivery of the calf and new milk production for the next year. Today's dairy cows' dates are made via computer and semen is sent to the dairy then a Vet. / inseminator inseminates the cow. The dairy cow never sees the bull much less has a romantic meeting. Range beef cows are fast catching up to the on line dating scene.

Regarding "pus" in milk ... Puss in milk is green colored and can easily be detected. Mastitis is a bacterial infection in the mammary gland, causing inflamation , hardness, cheezy or colorness secretions and when it occurs , the white blood cells are dispatched by the body to fight off the infection. This is where the confusion arises, while blood cells are not "pus". This happens in humans too. Each time the cow is milked, the udder is first washed with water then rinsed with an antibiotic. The milker then hand strips each teet to see the consistancy of the milk before the milking machine is attached. After milking her udder is again treated with an antibiotic solution and a salve to keep the udder soft. If there is an off consistancy to the stripped milk , the cow is sent to the hospital pen to be evaluated by a Vet. and if she has mastitis , she is treated. Her milk is never allowed to be sent into the milk supply. It behooves the dairyman to be very vigilant in the quality of their milk as it is tested by the processor dairy lab and if found to have any bacteria, the whole delivery is refused and the dairyman looses his daily production money. Also , since the public is sue happy, every step in the production process has to be vigilant . AS for the use of hormones, less than 20% of dairies use it as it only increases the milk amount by 10%. The hormone is naturally occuring and is found in all cows milk. Since the arrival of AI the average milk production on of a cow has increased way beyond that. Also, the return from the use of the hormone is minimal vs. the cost of it. Also, since the market place prefers their milk to be hormone free, the use of it is decreasing . By the way , Monsanto sold the production rights to the rBGH hormone.
