Lost all but one of my wifes roses. They budded, I pruned the dead off. Then came two hard freezes. The buds died and the stems turned dark brown or black. I replaced them today, with dormant ones.
It's a real shame the dead one I dug up had grown very nice roots. I put them in a 5 gallon bucket with a little water. I will pot them tomorrow, and set out in my makeshift nursery, to see if they can be resurrected.
We used to use styrofoam rose cones for winter and late spring freezes. They worked great but I had to set a big rock or brick on top of them to hold them down. I haven't seen styrofoam rose cones in a long time. Any idea where I can find them?
Sorry to hear that!
The more I garden, the more I am convinced that you gotta have them established in the ground for them to survive cold temperatures.
