Seed shopping in the food isle

I've done various beans and dried peas with success. Organic wheat and oats sprout well, I grow them into grass for my cats. (I buy bulk whole grains to make my own flour so I get it by the 50-pound sack, plenty to grow) I always grow potatoes and sweet potatoes from store bought ones. Also garlic, I buy whole cloves of garlic in the produce aisle and break them up and plant them.

Oh, I forgot garlic! I grew it from store bought as well....break them into cloves just as you describe.

Oh, glad for the reminder about garlic. I wanted to plant it this year and don't have any -- expensive to buy it for planting. I've had them sprout many times if they got pushed aside and not used quickly, so I'd planned to try this. I think I'm out of kitchen garlic though LOL.

i'm planning on trying to grow chick peas (gabanzo beans) and i was going to get them from GourmetSeeds.com but my dh said 'why not see if they sell a bag of them at the store!' so i found a 2lb bag at my local grocery store for under $2!

i have to ask, are butter beans a type of soybean? or is another type of bean somewhat related? my father in law was asking me to grow some for him but i'm only finding soybeans by that name and they don't look like what he described to me as being more like a lima bean! :/

This is a fabulous idea. We got some garlic last year that was beautiful and we'll be harvesting in July.

I'm not positive, but I was under the impression that lima beans are also called butter beans!

I grew wheat and amaranth last year from seed from the grocery store. We also got started on our millet, by planting the seeds from the sprayes sold for bird food.
I planted lentils and they grew well, but the seedpods only hold one or two lentils. Not really worth growing, but it was a fun project, to see if we could and what they looked like. I figure it still was good for the soil, since they are a legume.
I am thinking of trying to plant some nuts. I forgot to buy some raw nuts when I was at the store yesterday. Oh well, next time.
I planted popcorn that I got at the healthfood store. It was organic popcorn and it grew very well. We now have several jars of our own popcorn, from a handful that I planted.

I should try sesame again. I have tried to grow it in the past, but it didn't come up. Or if it did, I might have pulled it out, thinking it was a weed. Wouldn't be the first time I've done that.

Do they have a "bulk" section. That is where my supermarket has it. Also in small boxes in the "health food section".

Look for a hippy and follow them past the tofu crackers.

Seriously though, the quino in a Krogers will most like be a Bob's Red Mill product. Look by the gluten-free baking mix or near the almond meal.
