Yesterday I needed 4 trees transplanted, they where planted 2 to 3 years ago. The 1st tree was a weeping Japanese maple. It took 2 hours to dig out I wanted very large rootball. The next 3 another maple and 2 mulberry popped right out, their roots never left original soil in container. I thought at planting time I teased enough roots out to grow into soil, now I know I have to do a much better job. From now on any thing in a container is going to be barerooted before planting.
Spouse has had to get planted trees out of their tiny pots often. Usually the trees were "Heeled in" the nursery for just a short time and
when I thought about them again it was years later.
