Short day or long day onions?

I live in central Mississippi,zone 8.I have read about short day and long day onions,but have never grown any before.From what I can gather,short day onions should be planted in my location.No one I've talked to can tell me anything about the different types of onions.I would like to grow onions that store well and are about the size of a baseball.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I get my onions from Dixondale Farms their site has lots of info.

Generally you want short day in the South, long day in the North and Intermediate Day Onions in between.
