Because of the drought, many trees' foliage dried out and dropped off without ever displaying any color, just green to brown and then gone. Trees that did change were mostly muted shades rather than the vibrant reds and oranges of other years, and many trees changed color early and then lost their leaves. Right now the only splashes of color in the landscape are the reds of oaks, sumac, and burning bush, still hanging on.

We planted these maple and birch trees as tiny twigs a decade ago, in two lines alongside our northern boundary with a mowed path between, and they sort of made up for the lack of color elsewhere, seemingly unaffected by the uncharacteristic dry conditions. These sugar maples must be a different cultivar than those in the wild, as they turn color later every year. I like how the few remaining leaves on the river birch look like confetti.
