It's been a year or two since we've discussed solar ovens so I thought I'd bring the topic up again. It's a great energy-efficient way to cook without heating up your kitchen. You can buy them online or you can find instructions to make one. The idea is to use black to absorb the sun's energy and a double clear layer to give the greenhouse effect.

The downside is that you need to be home to use it. You need to keep shifting it so it is always lined up with the sun.

You can find a lot of different recipes, from meat dishes to cornbread, but where I think it really works well is vegetables cooked low and in their own juices. Sweet potatoes seem extra nice cooked in one of these. This one is cooking beets as I type. Temperature is about 260 Fahrenheit in case you can't read that thermometer.
