Hostas. Never heard of them, seen them mentioned occasionally here on TEG. I must confess, they are pretty and I like them. So......can any of you enablers give me a crash course on hostas? Like how big, like dry or wet, winter hardy.....etc..... Anybody?
 
OMG do you really want to get hooked? LOL I have a book with 1050 pages of Hostas. Each page may have two plants. SO there are over 2100 varieties and I am sure that is the tip of the iceberg! I lost some last summer do to a dry summer that was VERY hot. So I don't know how well they would do in TX. I grow them because the make great filler in shady areas.
 
Ok, learning some facts here.....
1. They are addicting.
2. There are over 2100 varieties.
3. Hostas grow in the shade.
4. Spell check does not recognize hostas as a word.
5. Hostas come in lots of colors.
6. Some of them are huge.

And #7 Bay, just to meet your landscape criteria, Hostas are edible!
 
I don’t grow them here but I had some in a large planter bed on my back porch in the New Orleans area and they thrived. They were in the shade but I don’t have an idea what kind they were, just “hostas”. You might check around, maybe with Mastergardeners, and see what varieties people grow there. And think shade on the north side of the house or a building
 
Some types do better than others in the warmest climates Hostas Direct.
My daughter had trouble growing them in Abilene, TX, although gardening is not her top talent.:idunno

Except for my deer problems, they are carefree, and very very addicting!... like there should be a group.:eek:
