Is it late July yet?


DW wanted purple potatoes - Majesty. I find the color a little off-putting. But, then again, I had trouble with Yukon Gold because it only looked like it was loaded with butter .

Not many of the tubers but the plants flowered and even dropped their petals ... I haven't looked to see if seeds formed. Removing 2 plants made room for a zucchini plant so those late-planted things didn't all have to crowd in with the onions.

I'm looking forward to the other spuds ... notably, Yukon Gold . How about you??

the color of those potatoes is interesting, but it is the flavor that would count the most. are they good?

roasting a ribeye steak, salad ready, just waiting for one brother and sister in law to show up, watching clouds go by slowly, there's not much of a breeze out there today.

Had a good size serving with my Portobello hamburger ... and peas. (Peas, peas, peas ... 2 weeks ago it was kale, kale, kale. Two weeks before that it was bok choy, choy, choy . I guess that this is the way we are supposed to eat, eh?)

Anyway, I learned about the time that I again began to grow potatoes that some varieties are considered "waxy" and that this is a favorable condition for some purposes. Maybe Majesty is only semi-waxy so boiled, it makes me think that it's better baked, but I don't remember having it that way -- this is only the 2nd or 3rd time that I have had a few plants in the garden.

With freshly ground pepper and butter, they taste mostly of freshly ground pepper and butter . S'okay. Maybe somewhat better than okay.

Yummy! I got a bunch of little potatoes yesterday from the farmer's marked and can't WAIT to make crash potatoes with them.

i like butter on them, but not much else, would make a very colorful shepards pie. which is perhaps my all time favorite use of mashed taters. with roasted carrots, peas, etc. you could almost have a rainbow on a plate.

I know that DW was hoping for tiny, New Potatoes and then she would put them with the snap peas ... with cream. Our peas are late this year, thanks to the tractor guy . The shell peas are almost ready but the spuds are beyond "new." "Fresh" but not tiny ... Luckily, the peas didn't burn up with the hot weather!

our neighbor years ago had her family hooked on potatoes with beans, but i'm not sure how they were done, but i recall something about milk and butter. i like beans about any way, same with peas. all good ...

the peas here usually give up by mid-summer, but if i start some in the next few weeks and they survive i can get a small fall crop. usually, though, i don't get anything planted this time of the year.

The shell peas were ready!

So ... we had some yesterday with Red La Soda potatoes. Intended to get the Yukons once the plant was lifted above the soil, there was no putting it back.

Years ago it was said that Pontiac was the standard red, on the market. I have read that Red La Soda is popular from one side of the US to the other. I suppose that means that it’s commonly available.

Oh well, they are very nice potatoes! Tasty!

i am a potato unsophisticate. i only know of red, white and yeller ones, oh and now purple too. once in a while i hear names like Yukon and Russet and now i have two new names for reds, but up until now i can't say i've heard any other names for them. small is the other name, roasted, yummy and buttered...
