sterilizing jars & lids for canning in the dish washer?

heh, not so much tupperwear, but the cheaper store bought stuff has warped and shriveled around the edges in mine! i learned years ago from my mom's Bosch that you can't put plastic in the bottom rack or it will melt it. the top rack doesn't do as much damage for some reason.

MontyJ........I just can't believe your DW does not have a dishwasher.....we'll let you go this time since you plan on surprising her with one. Our house didn't have one and I cheerfully gave up the cabinet space to get one installed. I hate washing dishes and going to the laundromat. If I go to the HOT place when I die, my punishment for eternity will be to wash all the dishes and take everybody's dirty clothes to the laundromat.

the house we inherited and fixed up was lucky it had some support for the sink, let alone some upper cabinets left. so i got to design mine with the idea that a dishwasher was eventually going in! took nearly 5 months after we moved in to get it ordered and installed! i was getting really tired of hand washing all my dh's dishes that were supposed to be one of his chores.

Yes, I do. If I'm not sure later, I can always hand wash them right before using, and I always heat up the kettle to pour boiling water in them right before filling so the glass isn't shocked by temperature.
Let's be specific: you throw away the flat lids but you keep the jars and the screw on tops and those are what I wash in my dishwasher. After the washing I habitually put a new lid out of the package on it, so there isn't even any dust inside the jars, and they are ready whenever I choose to can.
I'm working on getting my pressure canner workable and for that I am choosing to use brand new jars.

i thought some time back i found there are reusable plastic lids for canning. i wasn't sure if anyone on here uses those or has at least seen them. i think it was on some sort of homesteading website. if anyone has these i just have a question: do you have to apply wax around the top of the jar to help with the seal or do they stay put with no leakage?

Are you thinking of http://www.reusablecanninglids.com/ Ive never used them but from what I read its just a rubber ring on a plastic lid. No wax just screw the ring on them and can like normal.

Your welcome! I looked into them a while ago but the cost deterred us from getting them.
