Strange tree Id.

Or maybe it's a shrub, it was pretty small and skinny and growing next to an Elm. I HAVE NO CLUE what it is and I know my trees. Never seen it before and I'm kinda clueless. If you run out of tree/shrub ideas mention anything else you think it looks like, maybe I'm crazy and it was actually a vine growing on a small tree I don't know, but I'd love some help.

That looks about right...hmmm, I'm not even sure gooseberries are native here. Wonder where it came from?

We have wild Currants that look like that around here.

They are not at all a tree though. They can wrap around a tree and grow some 5 or 6 feet up it. In fall their leaves get a similar color to poison oak leaves, and they are often found not far from poison oak. Even though I easily tell them apart, on the off chance I might make a mistake, I don't eat our wild currants.

That leaf looks very similar to my yellow currant. It gets about 8 feet tall here in my yard. But it's definitely a multitrunked shrub,...

It could be as it looks very much similar. It is an attractive shrub with fragrant yellow flowers. It has yellow berries that turn black as they ripen and are quite tasty. This xeriscape plant tolerates a range of light exposures and soil types and can be used on difficult sites, but make sure they have good drainage.

My currants don't have fuzzy stems. My gooseberries do. Gooseberries grow wild around here as well.
