Straw hay as mulch?

I use hay because it's free, but I prefer straw if I can get my hands on it. If I put the hay down heavy enough I don't have too many problems with it sprouting until I till it under, even then it's not that big of a deal. It's amazing how much it helps break up my clay. This year I can tell a huge difference in where the hay was last year and where it wasn't.
