still have to pick off Japanese Beetles every day. if i skip a day or two the damage can get pretty bad on some plants. always interesting how they favor certain varieties over those right next to them. they mostly ignore lima beans almost completely so far.

it is more JBs than i've had in most years of growing beans, but considering how many plants i have out there it really isn't a huge issue. i get maybe one to two dozen each day. yesterday i'd gotten over that amount by a few dozen but that was because i skipped a few days. hopefully today it will be back down to a more reasonable amount - but i better get to it. the sooner done the better as the JBs aren't as active and you don't have them flying or crawling away as much.

i should be outside the next few days picking whatever dry beans are close to being done since it will be sunny and dry.

I will miss that surprisingly good little kodak 10 mp with its great Ektanar lens that they modernized into a zoom. The dealer gave me a thousand dollars for the old 2002 subaru, which was basically giving me a thousand dollars, so i think they can have that camera. Meantime, I've been seriously thinking of upgrading in terms of camera...which will wait until i finish paying off my newer 2011 subaru in 11 months. what a nice car! it's good for any lane on hiway 101, and it is an automatic, which i feel i'm old enough to deserve. shoot, it doesn't even use gears!!!!! No matter how fast you go, it stays right around 1900 rpm's. It has gadgets i don't even know what they do. Anyhow, once things settle, i'll get this canon rebel camera with 2 lenses...(see if i remember how to post a photo)

i hope it turns up! can you call and ask them? perhaps it is still in there or they have it in lost-and-found... worth a shot. :)

I actually wish local nurseries would/could sell Lizards and Frogs n Toads by the dozens or hundreds to get rid of bugs in gardens and farms! About 50 praying mantises would be nice too! A great invention someone could make a fortune with, would be Artificial Spider Webs, fully reusable! Just vacuum it clean every other day with the specially made bug shredding hand held vacuum cleaner, batteries not included, for 49.85, with a money back guarantee...but wait! Buy NOW, and get 3 extra artificial spider webs, with a lifetime guarantee, for FREE!

well, i had to try a melon to see what was up with them, we have a lot of them out there that we'll likely have a hard time eating or giving away all at once so i sacrificed one for the cause of learning. it was one of them that was no longer shiny and green, but it wasn't yellow yet either, it was just starting to turn. obviously now it wasn't ready.

the seeds inside were fully formed, the flesh of the melon was just starting to turn and get a little sweet, but there really wasn't much flavor to it. i ate some anyways as i figure trace nutrients and melon juice are ok. Mom said i'd get a stomach ache so i didn't eat a lot of it, but more than a few bites. i really hate throwing away food...

the seeds i took some to dry and the rest i took outside and planted to see if any of them will sprout. not to get a crop but just to see if they even viable at all. i also buried the rest of the melon in that garden where i'm burying the tomato left-overs and the weeds as i keep clearing that garden out to reclaim it. the worms will enjoy it. :)

we usually have praying mantisses here. i rescue them when i'm mowing to keep them from getting run over. most often i see the green kind here, but there are brown ones around too.

i'm sure you could rig up a tube of something like velcro where if you pull on the end it would retract and no longer be sticky. push it back out and sticky again. getting the bugs off... nah, that's what ants and worms can do.

alas, with the recent crusades here against stagnant water where a frog or toad may lay eggs there are not as many toads or frogs around. there are some, but not nearly as many as there used to be before the poisoners were hired to go after the mosquitoes.

no, it is annoying that the tags are different, they're the I M G and / I M G ones enclosed in square brackets.

reliable wheels are a requirement for most people. i sold mine, but they were still reliable for running, but they were also reliable for attracting mice and were about to be reliable for requiring me to spend a lot of money to fix the rust and rear end and other things (including the mouse problem)... i do miss it, a car of 20 something years is not easily forgotten, especially when it was the first car i'd bought new and paid cash for.

i've had a few cameras too, recently had to replace mine and still learning to use it. really need to spend more time but at the moment it isn't winter and my time is shot...

@ninnymary here's a pic of a nice spot in one of the two melon patches. i was worried we weren't going to get very many melons but this picture shows you that's not going to be an issue this year.

Well, I have a few, Gris de Rennes. This is the one furthest along. Even if there is an August frost, which I'm not anticipating, I should see that one ripen :D.

I don't think that I did anything to hamper @ninnymary 's melon. The cucamelon has no fruit that I can see, at all! They are tiny, camouflaged and really a good example of the close genetic relationship between melons and cucumbers. I know that I had fruit off their vines in previous years ...

The Passport Galia are doing better than anything, and that includes the Goddess cantaloupe. One of these days, I should grow Passport and Diplomat side by side to see if there is any actual difference between the two. Anyway, couldn't get a more surefire choice for here, one or the other. I may have to experiment more with the cantaloupe.

:) Steve
