I bought four plants labeled as cantaloupe from my local garden store and planted them sometime around the end of March, beginning of April. I expected to see a round fruit like I normally see from a cantaloupe. Instead, they started developing more of an eggplant shape, large rounded bottom and the tapered to the top. They have filled out on the top as they have grown so they are more of an even oval shape now. I picked one today just to open it up and see what it looked like. So what do I have and how will I know when they are ripe?

Did you taste it? It certainly looks like cantaloupe inside-if not outside???

There is a variety of cantaloupe that is oval. I bought one last month. NO IDEA what it is called. I lost the sticker.. Looks like it isn't quite ripe yet. Could that be a valencia?

I'm wondering if it is a crenshaw or crenshaw hybrid.

Its a melon. That's all that matters!
Save the seeds from the best one and grow more next year.

What??!! You gave a perfectly good melon to some mangy chickens?? :ep

That's it - your Green Thumb will hereafter turn black unless you eat the next one.
If you don't, the Melon Faeries will curse you for good.
(Believe me, the Melon Faeries are not to be trifled with)
