Of all the tomatoes I planted, my Ultimate Opener hybrids (57 days) are the LAST tomato to ripen...still not ripe yet! Me thinks I did not get the right seeds in the packet they sent me. These aren't on a cluster like in the pic. And they're bigger. Probably still some kind of hybrid though. They are large, perfectly round, flawless looking tomatoes. So much for early tomatoes.

Also, I think I've got some kind of insidious disease on some of my tomato plants. Mostly the Costoluto Genovese. I've got to get some pics up so you guys can help me pinpoint it. I'm trying not to be paranoid...but it's looking a lot like Late Blight. Even the fruit are affected with black spots.

Hmmm... I can't help with they type, but yeah, they could have easily mixed up the seeds in the packet. It happens from time to time!

Pictures would be great as you don't want to jump the guy, but if I'm unsure what it is... I start a neem oil treatment right away either way. That way I've got it covered if its one of those 'nasty' ones. Doesn't always fix everything, but if you caught it early enough it will help, and maybe contain it while you figure it out.

Last year I ordered black cherry tomatoes. I ended up with black plum seeds in the black cherry packet. I thought my tomatoes had some weird disease when they came out all funny shaped!

Journey, I grew Ultimate Opener in 2007 and came away with this impression: the flavor is all but nonexistent.

It is NOT earlier that Early Girl altho' the catalog company said it was. The yield was substantial and the fruit was larger than EG and that was about it.

Theres no telling what you got, but big and round sounds like some form or hybrid of beefstake. If so, you should be pleased with the taste when they finally ripen. Hope it turns well for you.

I was hoping to take some pics of it today, but had company over and never got time. That website you referred to was very helpful, Steve. It's looking a lot like early blight . Our conditions have been just right for it. Or maybe black mold . The lesions eventually develop a fuzzy moldy appearance. The lower leaves are affected too and look more like the early blight to me. Sounds like I can keep it at bay by spraying a fungicide? I'll look for the neem oil. Fortunately most of the other varieties I planted seem to be resisting it. The Costoluto Genevese gave me problems last year too. Too sensitive. It's really unfortunate...they make a wonderfully thick, sweet, deep red tomato paste. If you live in a drier climate, they might be worth your while.

I figure my mystery tomato is going to be pretty tasty...you know, good things come to those who wait. Sounds like it was just as well that I didn't get what I ordered. I tried a little hard to plan my tomatoes better this year, to cover all my tomato needs. LOL My very kind neighbor had been sharing her abundance with me until mine came on. Now I'm sharing back a few tasty heirloom slicers for her. It's a good arrangement! We swap plants/flowers all the time.

You know, I got these tomatoes mulched immediately after planting them this year. I was really hoping to avoid the soil borne diseases since there would be no splashing up. It's just been so wet and humid. But the garden is doing so much better than I anticipated after such a rough start to the season.

I've had problems with whitefly, caterpillars, and powdery mildew, but never blight (thankfully). My toms were prone to splitting though (hot summer, and trying to keep everything watered well did it, I suspect).

We had Grosse Lisse tomatoes growing. Supposedly they're a medium sized one, but these were HUGE. The biggest one weighed almost a pound. If they were Grosse lisse, they were were loving the location.

If it helps any, I've had blight two years running... this is the first year I've had no blight! Thank goodness!

Unfortunately I'm stuck with downy mildew on my melons and cukes AGAIN! At least it came on late in the season and I got a good harvest first.

I really hope its not blight though....

Finally got some pics of the damage... Didn't get a pic of the moldy spots though. The mold only shows up after they're ripe on the spots of the fruit that were already turning brown when the tomato was still green. I've seen it in black and also a couple spots that were pink mold!

I've only noticed the damage on the lower leaves and some of the fruit per plant. Anybody recognize this?
