The 2014 Little Easy Bean Network - Get New Beans On The Cheap

That makes sense. I'm merely pointing out that, since the purple in BP looks like that because of the pattern as opposed to the pigment (it's probably the technically the exact same shade of aubergine as any other purple bean, it just that being in little itty bitty speckles spread out makes it a lot lighter) trying to get it to transfer may not work. You may get a JC pattern bean with lavender replacing the maroon. There certainly are beans that are very much like that, like New Mexico Cave (basically JC with brown instead of maroon) or any or the orcas or calypso's (once you set aside the different bean shape, their actual seed coat patterns are certainly similar). But it seems to me that what you are more likely to get is a JC maroon on white pattern with the BP purple wash OVER it. Pretty certainly, but not exactly what it sounds like you are looking for.
That is half the fun, I might not get what I am looking for but I'm happy with anything.
I think with bean seed coats you can get so many wonderful combinations it really feels like a creative canvas.

Hi @Bluejay77 I received them the day before yesterday, and they are beautiful--thanks! My beans look black on my monitor--must be a difference there--sorry about that. Do blue beans exist? BTW The melon seeds are from the ones you admired!

Yes and no. Technically, "blue" is actually purple. But at certain saturation levels and overlays, it LOOKS blue. Remember what I said when I showed up on the other forum "my name is not an affectation, I really DO grow blue adzukis)

Hal,

Curious, how do you cross beans? Can you do a sort of tutorial?
I couldn't manage the camera work to put a tutorial together. I think there was a link to a tutorial in last years bean thread.
Also is at least once decent video on Youtube I think.

No problem with beans being black. I'll enjoy growing them just as much.

There is a guy in Germany who has a bean that is as blue on a bean as I have ever seen. I'm going to try to do a trade for some seed of them sometime. I think the bean comes from somewhere in Africa.

Glad you liked the beans, and hope they grow terrifically well for you.

Powder Star

Yes, one plant is making that slight color variation of the "powder". Other than that, she is breeding basically true.

Someone remind me to plant some of those next year with the darker powder color on the seeds.

Pole, Appalachian type, looks to be multi purpose.

Powder Star first appeared simultaneously with Nova Star's first appearance in my garden a few years ago, and is probably a full sibling...

Mayflower X Hutterite (Hutterite is my best guess for who the pollen parent may be).

>>> Nova Star
>> Snow Star...(white seeded, seems perfectly stable, semi greasy)
>> Black Supernova
> Black Supernova Dry Pod
> Black Supernova Snap Pod
> By God
>> Nova Star Main
>>> Powder Star
>> Powder Star "Darker Powder"

So many pretty beans here I thought I would add some of the ones I'm getting from the Andean/Ecuador 10 year old seed I grew this year.

They turned out to be pole beans that seem to want to climb forever. They all had mauve flowers with the exception of a couple which are just flowering (white flowers) and setting pods now. We've caged them in plastic but doubt very much I'll get viable seed from these, I think these ones must be day length sensitive. Not overly big pods and as tough as shoe leather so think these beans are used as dry beans.

That's a nice assortment of colors, @aftermidnight. It reminds me of "Pusacc Punuy" beans I saw in a book once (different patterns though): http://tinyurl.com/pusacc

Russ, I was just reading upthread about your Kishwaukee Yellow Wax stabilizing on three patterns, and I want to show you the five patterns I got out of it and ask if you'd ever had something similar. I got them in 2009 from ME LA N and the first year I grew them got 4 patterns: big dark brown, beige, black, and black-and-beige mottled; and the second and third years I got those 4 plus a pied one. Here's three each of the types from the third year:

And here's the pied ones from the second year:

So it's clearly still changing around some, since the pied ones switched from being pied + black-and-beige mottle to pied + solid black. A nice surprise when I opened the pods, though.
