sad to say a few weeks ago a squirrel did not make it across the road in front of me as i was driving. it made the mistake of running out into the road and then stopping in the middle to change it's mind. if it had kept going i'd have just missed it, but it stopped and then darted back the other way and the timing was not good for it because my right wheels put an end to it. 
poor critter...
i wasn't speeding or not paying attention it was just one of those things where some animals wait until the last moment to run out.
i don't drive often, i also don't hit a lot of animals, but i only recall in the past 30yrs i've hit 5 that i know of (two deer (and to be fair one of those ran into me), a bird, a squirrel and a groundhog).
