The outer husks come off as they dry, when they're ready to. Pecans tend to be very thin shelled. A cheapie nutcracker would do fine. Sometimes you can even crack them with your bare hands! When they're good and cured (before you crack them all open) put in bags, keep in the cabinet or freeze for longterm storage.

Can hardly wait for them to start falling. Three years ago I picked up and sold 2,800 lbs, year before last...1,700 lbs and last year.....2,100 lbs...........The extra money sure comes in handy, especially around Christmas time.

In Oklahoma I could go to the grove just below the Wister lake dam and rake up all I wanted. Picking up pecans is how kids earn their Summer money there. I miss Oklahoma.
