Thorns on tree

While posting no dumping signs in my woods, I came across trees with thorns. They had no leaves , where tall and slender, with good size thorns. Wild growing in Hudson Valley of NY. Does any one know what kind of trees these could be?

I would say a honey locust...Often used for fence posts. Fast growing and nice and straight.

I don't know about your area, but here in Oklahoma a thorned wild tree is almost always a bodark.

Actually quite a few trees have thorns; The aforementioned honey locust, black locust, bodark (also known as osage orange) and prickly ash to name just a few.

Locust-they spread like crazy.

In parts of Texas they use black locust as fence posts. It's probably the longest lasting wood of them all. The old saying is that if you use black locust as fence posts the post will outlast the hole (you have to be a Texan to understand that one :/ ) The only trouble is that black locust is as crooked as a snake which makes for some really weird looking fences.
