i have a can of mushroom soup on my counter here in my room. a few days ago when Mom was making soup she pulled the tab off. i can maybe hit it with a hammer on the side and see if that will split the seam in the top or just hit it on the top with the hammer and use a small piece of wood... the regular can opener won't open it. but there are other options too. pliers, dremel tool, welding torch (pre cooked!), etc. (no, i don't really have a welding torch)... m80s (i don't have those either). put it on the driveway and run over it, etc...
Standing in line at the grocery store recently, an older lady turned to me and said that she won't buy the cans with pull off lids. I suggested pliers but should have said "screwdriver first." Losing a fingernail ain't fun.
Interesting that building bomb shelters in the 50s-60s was capitalized on by Texas Instruments, etc. for the sale of the new transistor radios, I recently read.
