Today's garlic harvest

Here is the garlic I pulled up today. This was planted last fall. We have about this much more that we planted this spring. Looks like it will be ready to pull soon. I don't think those heads will be as big, though. Apparently we need to stick to planting garlic in the fall!

How did you decide when to harvest the garlic, @skeeter9? I have mine planted in the fall. It is still looking fresh and growing well. I also have bulbuls that were planted last year, but I don't expect much growth on them yet.

I planted mine in the fall and I pulled them in July last year. I was told they will get scapes on top and the leaves will start dying back and that around here July 15 is about when to pull them no matter what. Mine are huge this year, at least the tops are.

Those are nice Skeeter! Looks like they made good heads. What variety are they?
I missed my fall plant out, but definitely going to get my stuff together this year and get some in. It's so nice to have lots of garlic at hand for winter meals.

Hey, you just reminded me!!! I have to cut the scapes off mine. Darn, I saw them this weekend and forgot all about it.

Scapes form on hardneck varieties. I plant softnecks here which don't produce scapes. When the leaves are about 40% dried is time to check for harvesting and not by a certain date.

Yes, hardneck. I never planted softneck. I am not sure by that picture if they are hard or softneck, but they sure do look good!

Those look great, @skeeter9 ! My hardneck scapes showed about 2 weeks ago. I harvest when about 1/3rd of the leaves have turned brown - might be a few week yet here in PA.

oooh, i'll have to check mine for scapes too. i have a mix of both hard and soft necks in my 'collection' of 14 varieties going this year.
